Effective performance management
As stated in Section 4 of the Education Regulations 2012 "The governing body of the school must appoint an external advisor for the purposes of providing it with advise and support in relation to the appraisal of the head teacher"
Contact
As an ex-head teacher and current school improvement advisor, I am perfectly placed to support your head teacher’s performance management appraisal and use this as a driver for school improvement. I believe that effective performance management drives the school improvement process and improves the outcome for children. My services are offered to schools internationally and across the UK (Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, North West London and the surrounding areas)

How can I help you?
- Provide up to date knowledge of current issues and challenges facing schools, including the requirements of the new Ofsted framework
- Operate as a critical, professional friend and personal mentor
- Use my experience as a senior leader and school improvement advisor

Support and guidance
As a leadership consultant, I am not there to make decisions or set targets, I am there to advise, support and guide. I will use available evidence to advise the governors’ review panel in setting meaningful but achievable targets that can be measured.
Find out more
I work closely with the governors and the head teacher to promote a supportive and open dialogue. My advice will consider:
- The progress against the previous year’s objectives.
- The head teacher's overall performance
- The priorities for future objectives
- Areas for the continuous professional development of the head teacher
I offer a comprehensive package which supports the whole process of appraisal, including:
- Meet the head teacher with the aim to help him or her to:
- Achieve a realistic perspective on their performance
- Identify priorities which are sufficiently challenging but are not too ambitious
- Recognise relevant areas for continuous professional development
- Meet with the governors’ review committee to help them form a more comprehensive, evidenced picture of the head teacher’s performance than they might otherwise achieve.
- Support the governors to lead a positive, frank, challenging and open appraisal review meeting, advising where relevant.
- Write the appraisal review statement capturing the main points agreed at the appraisal review meeting and detailing any training and development needs for the governors to finalise with the head teacher.
- Support the governing body to set objectives that contribute to:
- Improving the education for all pupils at the school
- The implementation of any plan the governing body designed to improve the school’s educational provision and performance
- Work with you to:
- Create an in-depth School Development Plan linked to the head teacher’s performance management objectives
- Create performance management objectives for all staff
“Laura provides outstanding professional advice in her role as our external adviser for headteacher performance management. She has the skills, experience and objectivity to support the Governors' role in this process. When we floundered, she provided clarity in the review process and was an enormous help in ensuring we set objectives for our headteacher which are specific and measurable.”
- Val Osbaldeston, Chairman of Governors at Oakridge School, High Wycombe
- Kate Grafham, Head at The Mary Towerton School at Studley Green
